German Village Society Historic Preservation Weekend August 16 & 17, 2013

The German Village Society’s mission for historic preservation is the focus of two events Friday August 16 and Saturday August 17, 2013.

On Friday August 16 the German Village Society presents A “community reads” book discussion. Local authors Lucy Wolfe & Bob Hunter will discuss their book, A Historical Guidebook to Old Columbus:  Finding the Past in the Present in Ohio’s Capital City, at the German Village Meeting Haus, 588 S Third St, 43215. A reception with light hors d’oeuvres and drinks begins at 6:30 p.m., the main program begins at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets are $30 in advance and include a copy of the book. Tickets are available online at www.germanvillage.com.

On Saturday, August 18, TEA43206 ~ the 3rd annual garden party gala to benefit the Fund for Historic Preservation will be at 4:00 p.m. -- 7:00 p.m. at the German Village Guest House, 748 Jaeger St, Columbus 43206. Proceeds will be used to expand the Society’s mission-centric historic preservation and education activities.

Guests will enjoy iced and hot teas, wine, sweet and savory hors d’oeuvres and pastries. All men and women are encouraged to wear festive garden party attire and fabulous hats! The highlight of TEA43206 will be a hat contest. The event will also feature a number of exciting live and silent auction items.

“This third year of TEA43206 is another example of the generous and self-preserving nature of German Villagers. We expect this year will put us over $50,000 raised for Historic Preservation projects ~ the core of our mission ~ over the life of this event. It’s also a lot of fun which we kind of consider a secondary mission of the German Village Society,”  said Bill Case, President, German Village Society Board.

Advance tickets are $50 and are available at the German Village Meeting Haus 588 S Third St, Columbus 43215 or online at http://germanvillage.com/. Tickets will be $60 day of the event and may be purchased at the gate but attendance will be strictly limited to 225 guests.  The event will be held rain or shine.

German Village is an APA Top 10 Neighborhood of 2011

If you live in Columbus, then chances are pretty good that you already consider German Village to be a great neighborhood. Today, the American Planning Association (APA) confirms what we already knew with the designation of German Village as one of the “10 Great Neighborhoods” in the 2011 edition of the organization’s Great Places in America Program.

“German Village’s success is due, in part, to its ability to strike that intricate balance between contemporary function and historic integrity,” said APA CEO Paul Farmer.

Proof of that historic integrity lies with the hundreds of brick houses in the neighborhood that are immaculately maintained by homeowners. Our At Home series has profiled five German Village residences, which you can read about herehereherehere and here.

The neighborhood is well known for historic Columbus institutions such as Schmidt’s Sausage Haus, The Book Loft, and Schiller Park. German Village is also a great dining destination with favorites old and new, such as Katzinger’s DelicatessenHarvest Pizzaria and Bakery Gingham.

“The energy in here comes both from the mix of uses one sees and the sense of camaraderie one feels walking these brick streets,” said Farmer. “This modest neighborhood is defined not by any one iconic structure but by the way in which its unpretentious brick buildings and the spaces between them work together, creating a sense of place that is genuine.”

More information about the Great Places designation can be found at www.planning.org/greatplaces.
